Toward a formalization of musical relevance RIVISTO ACCETTATO

چکیده
This study is a tentative essay of formalization of the concept of Musical Relevance. Even if it is conceived in the framework of computationalism, until now Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory has no implementation. Moreover it has never been applied to the case of musical thinking. Our claim is that the application of the concept of Cognitive Relevance to music would permit to partially explain hearers’ behavior and composers’ choices. An efficient implementation could also give a support to the compositional decisions. The investigation of the plausibility of a computational model of Musical Relevance could contribute to the formulation of a general theory of musical cognition. We suggest to unify Relevance Theory with Generative Theory of Tonal Music, in order to formulate an algorithm for the calculation of Musical Relevance, approximating a model of relevance-guided musical reasoning (understanding/ creating). Finally we analyze some aesthetical consequences of applying Relevance Theory to music.

On Waiting
Waiting is the activity of maintaining selected aspects of a current situation over some period of time in order that certain goal-related actions can be performed in the future. Initial steps toward the formalization of notions relevant to waiting are presented. Conditions and information pertinent to waiting decisions are defined.
متن کاملBeyond the Regular: A Formalization of Non-Isochronous Metrical Structure
Meter perception is the process of inferring metrical structure, a hierarchical and regular mental framework of beats, from an auditory signal. Research on meter perception revolves around the question how listeners perform this task. Formal theories provide a complete abstract representation of metrical structure. Thereby, they provide a clear overview of its key properties and can be implemen...
متن کاملMusical Relevance: a Computational Approach
This study is a first attempt at formalizing the concept of Musical Relevance from a cognitive and computational perspective. We elaborate on Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory, and extend it to account for musical cognition, involving both listening and understanding. Our claim is that the application of the concept of Cognitive Relevance to music would permit us to partially explain hearer...
متن کاملContexts, Oracles, and Relevance
We focus on how we should define the relevance of information to a context for information processing agents, such as oracles. We build our formalization of relevance upon works in pragmatics which refer to contextual information without giving any explicit representation of context. We use a formalization of context (due to us) in Situation Theory, and demonstrate its power in this task. We al...
متن کاملThe Study of Tendency toward Various Types of Music among Young People in Zanjan
There are several reasons for usage of music and musical activities. Music is part of artistic activities of human beings. Perhaps people are exposed to music more than other artistic works in their daily lives. Due to the necessity of considering music as a part of human identity, we tried to study the amount of music used by young people in Zanjan based on four hypothesis: cultural li...
